Start from the school start date, not the moving date
Public schools and most private schools in Cyprus run from September to June. That single fact sets the pace for everything else in your move: the term you are aiming for decides when you need a school place, which decides when you need an address, which decides when your residency paperwork has to be underway.
So write the target term start at the top of the page and work backwards. Everything below is ordered that way rather than by what feels urgent.
9 to 6 months out: schools and the shortlist
This is the window where choices are still genuinely open. Popular year groups at the private English-language schools fill up, and once they do, your neighbourhood options narrow with them.
- Draw up a school shortlist and email each admissions office the same set of questions so the answers are comparable.
- Ask about the waiting list in your child's specific year group, not the school overall.
- Request the full cost picture in writing: tuition plus registration, transport, exams and extras.
- Start gathering documents that take weeks to obtain at home: birth and marriage certificates, school reports, criminal record checks.
- Get certified and apostilled copies while you still have easy access to the issuing authorities. You will be asked for the same papers repeatedly.
6 to 4 months out: the scouting trip
Plan at least five days on the ground and treat it as work rather than a holiday. A sensible split is two days on neighbourhoods, two on schools, and one on banks, doctors and practical errands.
The single most valuable thing you can do on that trip is drive the school run at 07:45 on a weekday. Limassol is a long, thin city and the coastal road at rush hour is a different place from the same road at 11am. A twenty-minute test drive can save you a year of regret about a lease.
Visit schools during a normal school week rather than an open day, and ask to speak to a parent already in that year group.
3 months out: housing, banking, residency
Order matters here, because most steps unlock the next one. A lease gives you proof of address; proof of address and a local bank account unlock most of the immigration and administrative steps that follow.
- Secure housing, even if it is a short initial lease while you learn the city.
- Open a bank account and expect it to be the slowest item on the list.
- Book the immigration appointment once you have the address, not before.
- Register your children's documents at the same time as your own - school registration and healthcare both trace back to them.

1 month out and the first weeks
The final month is logistics: shipping or selling, cancelling contracts at home, insurance, flights and the arrival week itself.
Build in a buffer. Something will take longer than expected, and it is usually banking or an appointment date. Families who arrive two or three weeks before term starts have room to absorb that; families who land the weekend before school starts generally do not.
